A 45-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with alleged racist slurs directed at Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida during last month's highly charged Tyne-Wear derby.

The Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Sunderland, hosted at St James' Park on March 22, was temporarily brought to a halt after a spectator reportedly hurled racist abuse at the visiting Dutch player.

Adhering strictly to the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocols, referee Anthony Taylor paused the match for three minutes early in the second half. The stoppage occurred in the 52nd minute while Newcastle's Sven Botman was already receiving medical attention. During the break, Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka approached the official, leading to a serious discussion between Taylor, both teams' coaching staffs, Xhaka, and Geertruida before play was allowed to resume.

Northumbria Police confirmed that a suspect from the Gateshead area was apprehended on Tuesday. He was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense and has since been released on police bail while authorities conduct further inquiries.

In the wake of the disturbing incident, both clubs issued strong statements denouncing the discriminatory behavior. Sunderland publicly threw their unwavering support behind their player:

"We stand with Lutsharel, who has our complete backing, and we commend him for displaying bravery and leadership by reporting this incident to the match officials."

Despite the ugly scenes in the stands, Sunderland maintained their focus on the pitch, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory to complete a season double over their fierce regional rivals.
