Ashley Iaconetti, a veteran of Bachelor franchise shows, has shared her perspective on the recent cancellation of Taylor Frankie Paul's season of The Bachelorette, suggesting the TikTok star wasn't prepared for the spotlight.

In an interview with Variety, Iaconetti called the situation "nuanced" but expressed relief that ABC halted production. "It's a good thing they didn't go forth with the season," she stated, though she noted the decision "should have been made more carefully earlier on."

The season was pulled just days before its scheduled March 22 premiere after video surfaced showing a physical altercation between Paul and her then-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen in February 2023. Paul later pleaded guilty to aggravated assault related to the incident.

"We knew very much in detail, based on a lot of the interviews that she's given, exactly what happened in the video and what led to the arrest," Iaconetti explained. "You guys did have her on a TV show for four seasons."

While condemning the violence shown in the footage as "terrible," Iaconetti suggested multiple factors made Paul unsuitable for the lead role. "That wasn't an appropriate role for her to fill," she continued, "and probably was not something that she was mentally, emotionally ready to take on for many reasons—the fact that she was so intertwined with Dakota going into it being one of them."

In the weeks preceding the cancellation, tensions between Paul and Mortensen—who had reportedly broken up in spring 2025—escalated. Utah police confirmed to People on March 16 that they had opened an investigation into an apparent February dispute between the former couple.

Following ABC's decision, Paul released a statement expressing gratitude for the network's support "amid a troubling situation." Her representative added: "After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm."

Mortensen responded with his own statement, saying: "I am, unfortunately, used to these baseless claims about me and our relationship, which I categorically deny."

The incident that ultimately derailed Paul's Bachelorette opportunity dates back to February 2023, when she was arrested following a confrontation with Mortensen. According to an affidavit obtained by ABC 4 Utah, Paul was accused of throwing metal chairs and a wooden playset at Mortensen while one of her children was present.

She initially faced multiple charges including felony aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child. In August 2023, Paul pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony count of aggravated assault, with four other charges dismissed. Her plea was held in abeyance for three years with conditions including substance abuse and domestic violence evaluations.

Despite the turmoil, Paul and Mortensen welcomed a son together in March 2024. In a September 2024 interview, Paul reflected on the 2023 incident, calling it their "rock bottom for sure" and expressing regret while acknowledging Mortensen's support during difficult times.

ABC has not commented on potential replacement plans for The Bachelorette season.
