Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has sidelined £107 million midfielder Enzo Fernandez for the club's next two matches following controversial remarks the player made regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old Argentine World Cup winner will be absent for Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, as well as a crucial Premier League showdown with Manchester City on April 12.
The disciplinary measure comes after Fernandez publicly cast doubt on his commitment to the Blues during a recent interview following Chelsea's Champions League elimination. While initially stating he was focused on his current club, Fernandez admitted he was unsure if he would remain in London next season. He later added fuel to the fire by expressing a desire to "live in Spain," noting that Madrid closely resembles his hometown of Buenos Aires.
Rosenior addressed the situation directly, emphasizing that while he understands the player's competitive frustration, the public flirtation with a potential transfer was unacceptable.
"It's disappointing for Enzo to speak that way," Rosenior explained. "I have got no bad words to say about him but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. As a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect. He's frustrated because he wants us to be successful."
The Chelsea boss highlighted that benching the star midfielder was a unanimous decision backed by the club's ownership, sporting directors, and the rest of the squad. However, he made it clear that Fernandez still has a future at the club once he serves his punishment.
"The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction. You have to protect the culture, and in terms of that, a line was crossed."
This internal drama caps off a dismal stretch for the West London outfit. Chelsea recently endured a brutal four-game losing streak in mid-March, which included an embarrassing 8-2 aggregate thrashing by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League round of 16.
Fernandez isn't the only Chelsea player generating transfer buzz amid the team's struggles. Defender Marc Cucurella recently hinted at a potential future return to Barcelona, though he quickly clarified his comments, insisting he remains "happy" at Chelsea and would prefer to stay for a few more years.
