Colchester United have confirmed that "detailed discussions" are underway regarding the potential sale of the League Two club, with reports linking a consortium featuring former Chelsea and England captain John Terry to the negotiations.
Chairman and owner Robbie Cowling issued a statement acknowledging the ongoing talks but declined to comment on specific individuals or groups involved. "Further details will only be shared once a transaction has been fully completed and all formalities have been concluded," Cowling stated. He emphasized that his priority remains "ensuring that any decision regarding the future ownership of the club is the right one for Colchester United, its supporters, and its long-term success."
This development follows a series of unsuccessful attempts to sell the club over the past year. A proposed deal with the US-based Lightwell Sports Group collapsed in June, and negotiations in January with the Sports Alpha Capital consortium—which included former AC Milan and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato—fell through the following month.
"My focus remains on ensuring that any decision regarding the future ownership of the club is the right one for Colchester United, its supporters, and its long-term success." — Robbie Cowling, Colchester United Chairman
John Terry, who retired from playing in 2018 after a storied career that included five Premier League titles and a Champions League victory with Chelsea, has since pursued coaching roles. He has served on the staff at Aston Villa and Leicester City and currently works with Chelsea's academy. Terry has publicly expressed frustration about not securing a head coach position, stating earlier this year, "Clearly the ownership, or whoever made those decisions... have gone 'no' not to include me, for whatever reason."
The potential involvement of Terry adds a notable dimension to the talks, as he has a personal connection to the club: his nephew, Frankie Terry, is a member of Colchester's first-team squad, having made 11 appearances this season.
Colchester United, currently positioned 13th in League Two, are set to host Accrington Stanley on Tuesday as the off-field developments continue to unfold.
