Delta Withdraws Objection to Philippine Airlines' Chicago Route Expansion

Delta Air Lines has officially withdrawn its opposition to Philippine Airlines' application to operate direct flights between Manila and Chicago, clearing a significant regulatory hurdle for the Southeast Asian carrier's North American expansion plans.

The U.S. Department of Transportation had been reviewing PAL's request to serve Chicago O'Hare International Airport when Delta, which operates its own transpacific routes, filed an objection citing competitive concerns. Aviation industry analysts note that Delta's reversal suggests the carrier has reassessed the market dynamics and potential impact on its operations.

"This development represents a major step forward for Philippine Airlines as they seek to strengthen their presence in key U.S. markets," said aviation analyst Maria Santos. "Chicago serves as a crucial hub connecting the Midwest to Asia, and direct service would benefit both business travelers and the Filipino diaspora."

Philippine Airlines currently operates flights to several U.S. destinations including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Honolulu. The proposed Chicago route would mark the carrier's first foray into the American Midwest, potentially creating new travel options for approximately 180,000 Filipino-Americans living in the region.

The withdrawal of Delta's objection doesn't guarantee automatic approval, but it removes a significant barrier in the regulatory process. The Department of Transportation will continue its evaluation of PAL's application, considering factors including bilateral aviation agreements, market demand, and operational feasibility.

Industry observers suggest the timing aligns with broader trends in transpacific travel recovery, as airlines worldwide seek to capitalize on rebounding international demand following pandemic-era restrictions. Philippine Airlines has been gradually rebuilding its long-haul network after emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2021.

Final approval could come within the next several months, with potential inaugural flights launching as early as next year if all regulatory requirements are met. The route would operate using PAL's Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which feature the carrier's latest business and economy class cabins.
