Derbyshire head coach Mickey Arthur has heaped extraordinary praise on 22-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, labeling the youngster a "national treasure" destined for immense success.

Having served as England’s primary spin option for two years, Bashir faced a significant setback when he was excluded from the playing XI for the entirety of the recent five-Test Ashes series in Australia. Compounding a difficult winter, his domestic team, Somerset, opted to release him in favor of his international colleague, Jack Leach.

Now embarking on a fresh chapter with Derbyshire, and armed with a mandate from the England camp to secure regular playing time, Bashir is looking to reinvigorate his promising career. Arthur, whose extensive international coaching resume includes stints with Pakistan, South Africa, and Australia, sees unparalleled potential in his new recruit.

"I haven't seen a spinner that is as consistent as what Shoaib is at the same age, so I just think the growth is going to be massive," Arthur remarked. "From what I've seen with Shoaib, the world is going to be his oyster. He truly is a national treasure."

While Arthur acknowledged that a young spinner's development is rarely without its hurdles, he believes the inevitable peaks and valleys will ultimately build vital resilience and experience.

Bashir's journey to international cricket has been highly unconventional. He was fast-tracked into the England squad before fully establishing himself at the county level, managing to claim a respectable 68 wickets across 19 Test appearances. However, his momentum stalled following a finger injury sustained against India at Lord's last summer.

When he returned to fitness in time for the Ashes, he struggled to make an impact in the warm-up fixtures—most notably returning figures of 0-115 against Australia A. Consequently, England selectors pivoted to an all-pace attack for the series opener before leaning on the all-round utility of Will Jacks for the remainder of the tour.

Despite the challenging winter down under, Bashir remains steadfast in his self-belief.

"I wouldn't say I was not bowling to my best, because I still feel like I was bowling quite nicely," Bashir explained. "It's just one of those where you're always looking to learn. I'm still so young and I don't take that for granted at all."

Proactively seeking to elevate his game, Bashir traveled to Zimbabwe following the Ashes to work closely with legendary former Pakistan spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, who was stationed there with the England Lions during the Under-19 World Cup.

Bashir is slated to make his Derbyshire debut this Friday in their County Championship opener against Worcestershire. With the English summer rapidly approaching, the battle for the national team's premier spin role is wide open. A strong start for Derbyshire will be crucial as Bashir looks to fend off fierce competition from Leach, the IPL-bound Jacks, Leicestershire's Rehan Ahmed, and Hampshire veteran Liam Dawson.
