Euphoria's Final Season Honors Fallen Stars with Emotional Tributes and Creative Choices

The third season premiere of HBO's critically acclaimed drama Euphoria opened with a poignant tribute to actor Eric Dane, who passed away earlier this year at age 53 after battling ALS. A title card featuring his photo and the words "In remembrance of Eric Dane" appeared at the episode's beginning, setting a somber yet respectful tone for what many believe will be the series' final chapter.

At the season's conclusion, the show expanded its memorial to include not only Dane but also actor Angus Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen, both of whom died unexpectedly in 2023. The "In Memoriam" screen served as a heartfelt acknowledgment of the significant losses the Euphoria family has endured.

Showrunner Sam Levinson revealed the extraordinary efforts made to include Dane's character, Cal Jacobs, despite the actor's declining health. "Eric called me before we started shooting and told me he had been diagnosed with ALS," Levinson shared in an interview. "We had conversations about life and what that meant. I told him, 'Whatever shape you show up in, we're going to make it work.'"

Levinson creatively worked around Dane's symptoms by incorporating them into the character's narrative. "He showed up with a slight slur in his voice," the showrunner explained. "I said, 'Don't worry. We'll just put five beer bottles in front of you and you've been drinking all night.' His character's final appearance in the season three trailer shows Cal attending his son Nate's wedding, marking Dane's last onscreen performance.

For Angus Cloud, who portrayed the beloved character Fezco and died of an accidental drug overdose at 25, Levinson made a different creative decision. Rather than writing the character out of the story, he chose to keep Fezco alive within the show's universe. In the premiere episode, Rue (Zendaya) reveals to Lexi that Fezco is serving a 30-year prison sentence following the violent raid that left his brother dead and himself severely wounded.

This choice held deep personal significance for Levinson, who had been close to Cloud. "I fought very hard to keep him clean when he was alive, and losing him was really tough," he confessed. "I felt like if I couldn't keep him alive in life, then I could in the show."

Levinson further explained that Cloud's death profoundly influenced the season's direction. "With addiction, you're supposed to be prepared for the loss of someone struggling, but his death stirred an anger—not only for him, but for the many young lives in America cut short by fentanyl," he wrote in a statement. "This season became my way to honor Angus and all the kids who weren't offered a second chance. I wanted to tell a story where hope and light could still be felt in the darkness."

The season premiere thus serves as both a continuation of Euphoria's complex narrative and a meaningful tribute to the talented individuals whose lives ended too soon, weaving their memories into the fabric of the show's final act.
