"Final Straw": Outspoken Labour MP Karl Turner Stripped of Whip Over Controversial Comments

Veteran backbench MP Karl Turner has been suspended from the Labour Party following a series of clashes with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's administration and highly publicized remarks regarding his colleagues.

A large red rosette with the word ‘Labour’ and smaller text is pinned to the left side of the jacket.

The representative for Hull East had the party whip formally withdrawn over what Labour insiders describe as a troubling "pattern of behaviour" and "uncollegiate" commentary, effectively forcing him to sit as an independent in the House of Commons.

Turner took to social media platform X to express his dismay, stating he was "disappointed to be suspended without prior discussion." He added that he has instructed his solicitor to demand a "full explanation" from the chief whip.

While Labour sources emphasize the suspension stems from personal conduct and previous written warnings, Turner insists he is being punished for his fierce opposition to the government's controversial plans to restrict jury trials.

"My loyalty remains, but so does my determination to stand up for what is right. I will continue to speak out against these proposals because my duty is to act in good faith, according to my principles and to protect the most vulnerable."

Earlier this year, the former barrister condemned the jury trial changes as a "stupid idea," publicly imploring Justice Secretary David Lammy to halt the initiative. He also recently told Times Radio he was undeterred by conduct warnings, stating he would not be "bullied around" and wouldn't mind triggering a by-election if pushed.

However, party insiders point to Turner's recent off-policy controversies as the primary catalysts for his exile. Last week, Turner stirred outrage by participating in an expletive-heavy interview with Jody McIntyre, an activist and journalist who narrowly failed to unseat Home Office Minister Jess Phillips in the recent general election. During the broadcast, Turner fueled speculation about the prime minister's former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, alleging he was still covertly running things in the background.

According to one Labour source, this interview was the "final straw even for his friends," leaving many of Turner's usual defenders completely appalled.

Turner subsequently expressed regret regarding the sit-down, claiming, "Had I known then what I know now, I would not have participated," and noting he had asked for corrections where his words were misrepresented.

The suspension also follows bizarre social media activity in which Turner baselessly suggested McSweeney had fabricated the theft of his government-issued mobile phone. In a controversial post, he wrote, "I don't believe McSwindle had his iPhone stolen." He later issued a sarcastic retraction, claiming he had "got the memo" and that any further questions were merely "conspiracy theory territory."

The decision to remove the whip has divided Labour MPs. While one parliamentarian remarked it was "about time" Turner faced consequences for "whipping up" online hostility against the government, another MP branded the leadership's move an act of "thin-skinned arrogance."

First elected in 2010, Turner previously served in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet. He secured re-election in 2024 with an expanded majority of 3,920 votes, beating out the Reform UK candidate for the seat.
