A decade ago, Anthony Barry was wrapping up a modest playing career in the lower leagues of English football, taking his first tentative steps into coaching at Accrington Stanley. Today, the 39-year-old is gearing up for a World Cup campaign as Thomas Tuchel's assistant manager—standing out as the only Englishman within the newly appointed head coach's core backroom staff.
Barry's professional trajectory is nothing short of extraordinary. The Liverpool native boasts a glittering resume that includes elite club stints at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, alongside high-profile international roles with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal.
The dynamic between the English coach and Tuchel is uniquely effective. Barry humorously refers to himself as the "yin to Tuchel's yang." Acknowledging the stark contrast in their physical statures and backgrounds, he notes that outsiders might view them as a "little and large" pairing.
Reflecting on their strong bond, Barry points out that their connection evolved naturally from a purely professional arrangement into a deep friendship. "We spend a lot of time together speaking, working, fighting, building teams - but he's a person and a character I admire and I'm in awe of," Barry explained.
Barry’s rapid ascent began shortly after he hung up his boots to become an assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. His major breakthrough arrived after he caught the eye of Frank Lampard during a UEFA Pro Licence course. This connection earned him a first-team coaching role at Chelsea in the summer of 2020. When Tuchel replaced Lampard in early 2021, he wisely retained Barry, and the newly formed coaching duo went on to lift the Champions League trophy just months later.
Beyond his club successes, Barry has built a formidable reputation in international football. He served under Roberto Martinez for both the Belgian and Portuguese national teams. These roles provided him with invaluable experience at major tournaments, allowing him to work closely with global icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne.
Tuchel and Barry's paths crossed again in 2023 when the German manager brought his trusted lieutenant to Bayern Munich. Now, as they prepare for a new chapter, Barry has signed a contract running until 2028, alongside fellow core staff members Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer, and James Melbourne. Highly regarded English coach Justin Cochrane will also supplement the wider backroom team during international breaks.
Renowned for his innovative methods and boundless energy, the former midfielder has carved out a distinct niche as a set-piece specialist, cementing his status as one of the brightest strategic minds in the modern game.
