Former England and Premier League striking sensation Jermain Defoe is officially stepping into the dugout. The 43-year-old has been appointed as the new manager of National League side Woking, marking his first foray into football management as he replaces outgoing boss Neal Ardley.
Despite a glittering playing career that saw him score prolifically at the highest levels of the game, Defoe is remaining grounded about his new career path. Embracing the reality of the managerial ladder, he admitted he is fully prepared to put in the hard work required at the non-league tier.
"I can't expect to jump in at the top level," Defoe stated, emphasizing his desire to properly "earn his stripes" on the touchline.
While he is starting his managerial journey away from the bright lights of the Premier League, Defoe's competitive drive remains unchanged. The rookie manager has already set his sights on a lofty objective: securing promotion and ultimately guiding Woking into the English Football League.
