Gennaro Gattuso's brief stint as the manager of the Italian national football team has come to an abrupt end. Following a devastating failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Gattuso and the Italian football authorities have mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The decision comes on the heels of Tuesday's heartbreaking play-off defeat, where the Azzurri fell 4-1 in a penalty shootout against Bosnia-Herzegovina. This crushing loss guarantees Italy will miss out on football's biggest summer showcase yet again. The Azzurri, who last appeared on the World Cup stage in 2014, are now the first former champions in history to miss three consecutive editions of the tournament.

Gattuso—a legendary, hard-tackling midfielder who earned 73 caps and lifted the 2006 World Cup with Italy as a player—took the managerial reins from Luciano Spalletti last June. Despite securing six victories in his eight matches at the helm, failing to deliver World Cup qualification ultimately sealed his fate.

Addressing the media after the disastrous playoff, an emotional Gattuso apologized to fans, admitting the situation was "hard to digest."

"With a heavy heart, having failed to achieve the goal we set ourselves, I consider my time as coach of the national team to be over," Gattuso stated. "The Azzurri jersey is the most precious asset in football, which is why it's right to facilitate future technical evaluations right from the start. It has been an honour to lead the national team, and to do so with a group of players who have shown commitment and devotion to the jersey."

The shockwaves of Italy's elimination have triggered a mass exodus within the national sporting hierarchy. Gattuso's exit directly follows the resignation of Italy's football association (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina on Thursday. Additionally, iconic former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon announced his resignation from his role as delegation head via Instagram.

As the four-time world champions enter a massive rebuilding phase, speculation is already mounting over Gattuso's successor. Current AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has emerged as an early fan favorite, though the federation faces a monumental task in reshaping a deeply wounded national squad.
