Roberto De Zerbi, the newly appointed head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, has issued a formal apology to the club's supporters regarding his previous comments about controversial forward Mason Greenwood.

The Italian manager faced immediate backlash from several Spurs fan groups upon his arrival in North London. The tension stems from remarks De Zerbi made while managing Greenwood at Marseille, which many supporters interpreted as a defense of the player.

Greenwood was arrested in 2022 and faced serious charges, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault. However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case in early 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new material emerged, stating there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.

Seeking to mend fences early in his Tottenham tenure, De Zerbi addressed the unrest directly through the club's official website.

"I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women, or violence against anyone more broadly," De Zerbi stated.

The 46-year-old emphasized his track record of protecting vulnerable individuals, insisting he is not the type of manager to compromise his morals simply to win trophies or secure three points.

"I'm sorry if I offended anyone's feelings with this subject matter. I have a daughter and I'm very sensitive to these things and I always have been," he explained. "I hope that over time people will get to know me better and understand that at that moment, I didn't mean to take a stance."

De Zerbi inherits a precarious situation at Tottenham. He was brought in to replace interim boss Igor Tudor, who was shown the door on Sunday with Spurs languishing in 17th place in the Premier League—just one point clear of the relegation zone.

The friction with the Spurs faithful dates back to November during De Zerbi's stint in France. Following Greenwood's £26.6 million transfer from Manchester United to Marseille, De Zerbi publicly praised the 24-year-old, who ultimately became a top scorer in Ligue 1.

"I don't want to get involved in anyone's private life... All I can see is that Mason seems a good lad, he paid in a strong way for what happened," De Zerbi said at the time. "He has probably here found the right environment for him, which gave him affection, and held out its hand to him."

Now tasked with saving Tottenham's disastrous Premier League campaign, De Zerbi is evidently eager to clear the air with the fanbase and redirect the club's focus back to survival on the pitch.
