Thomas Tuchel has dismissed any feelings of frustration toward the eight players who have departed the England squad ahead of Tuesday's international friendly against Japan, citing the intense physical demands of the modern football calendar.
Following a 1-1 draw with Uruguay last Friday, a quintet of key figures—Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, John Stones, Adam Wharton, and Noni Madueke—exited the camp. They join Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Aaron Ramsdale, and Fikayo Tomori, who were previously trimmed from the manager's initial 35-man extended roster.
The Japan clash represents the Three Lions' final gathering before the May 30 deadline for Tuchel to officially name his World Cup squad. Despite the disjointed preparation, the German tactician remains empathetic to his players' grueling schedules.
"I am disappointed, but not with the players—with the fact we want to have everyone in good spirits and health," Tuchel explained, pointing out the compounding toll of domestic and European competitions. "We have players in camp that have already played more minutes than last season, so there is some concern."
Tuchel originally split his expanded group into two factions to navigate the dual international fixtures, blending fringe hopefuls with established starters. He emphasized that the squad needed a mental break but praised their underlying commitment, noting that even those sidelined by injury opted to stick around the training base for treatment rather than rush home.
"I got the feeling that everyone was desperate to come. Some of the injured players even stayed to do their treatment. That shows they want to be around the group. No-one left straight away. It's a good spirit and that's how it should be."
Tuchel acknowledged that while he wants his stars performing well for their respective clubs, the ultimate goal is reconnecting with the national team's core principles before heading to North America.
England's World Cup campaign across the United States, Canada, and Mexico kicks off shortly after June warm-up matches against Costa Rica and New Zealand. The Three Lions will begin their group stage journey against Croatia on June 17, followed by clashes with Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27.
