Inside Roblox's Safety Crisis: Insider Urges 24/7 Supervision for Young Players

Despite its status as the reigning champion of children's gaming, Roblox harbors a dark underbelly that demands constant parental vigilance, according to an independent developer on the platform.

The developer, operating under the pseudonym "Sam," stepped forward to speak out after hearing Roblox executives publicly praise their own safety protocols. In stark contrast to the company's reassurances, Sam insists that young children are vulnerable to severe and immediate risks while logged in.

"When playing Roblox, children need to be monitored 24/7. And if that's not possible, then they shouldn't be playing Roblox," Sam warned.

As a volunteer for a non-profit online safety organization and an active creator who earns income through Roblox, Sam possesses unique insight into the platform's daily operations. With over 80 million daily active users globally—roughly 40% of whom are under the age of 13—the scale of the company's moderation challenge is massive.

The platform functions as a vast virtual sandbox where users can design, monetize, and play community-created games. However, critics have long argued that this open-world format serves as a hunting ground for bad actors. Sam's firsthand accounts validate these fears, noting instances where users are manipulated by strangers and coaxed into moving their conversations to unmonitored, off-platform messaging apps.

More disturbingly, the developer claims to have stumbled upon deeply traumatic user-generated content. Among the prohibited creations he encountered were games simulating the horrific school shootings at Columbine and Sandy Hook, as well as digital recreations of Jeffrey Epstein's private island. Furthermore, Sam alleges that the platform's community reporting system is highly ineffective, estimating that only about a third of flagged safety concerns are actually addressed by moderators.

Roblox continues to fiercely defend its moderation efforts. A company spokesperson emphasized that user safety remains a "top priority," pointing to a robust system of advanced filters, automated safeguards, and independent age verification protocols. The company stated that it swiftly punishes rule-breakers and constantly monitors accounts for behavior that misaligns with a user's registered age, prompting a re-verification process when necessary.

Recently, Roblox introduced a sweeping ban on adults messaging children directly and mandated age verification checks worldwide. Even so, international patience is wearing thin. The platform has already faced outright bans in nations like Turkey and Russia over child exploitation concerns. Later this month, Indonesia will enforce a strict block on the platform for users under 16.

Meanwhile, lawmakers in the UK and Australia are actively evaluating comprehensive social media restrictions for minors. While it remains to be seen if interactive gaming hubs like Roblox will fall under the UK's potential ban umbrella, regulatory pressure is clearly mounting.

Interestingly, the most sobering advice regarding the game may actually come from the top of the company itself. Earlier this year, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki acknowledged the immense challenge of digital parenting, offering a remarkably blunt perspective on the multi-billion dollar platform he built.

"My first message would be, if you're not comfortable, don't let your kids be on Roblox," Baszucki stated. "I would always trust parents to make their own decisions."
