Welsh record-holding javelin thrower Freya Jones has suffered a devastating setback in her preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games after four of her javelins were crushed during international transit.
The 32-year-old athlete, currently ranked 35th in Europe, was en route to Australia when a luggage buggy ran over her gear during a layover in Brunei. The unfortunate incident occurred just four months before she is slated to compete in Glasgow.
While Jones is currently navigating the insurance process to replace the expensive equipment—which ranges from £700 to £1,200 per javelin—she emphasised that the loss extends far beyond the financial burden.
"I'm not going to sugarcoat it - I cried," Jones shared. "If you're a javelin thrower you'll understand how personal your implements are. They're not just equipment, they're imprinted to you in a way. I've had one of these for years and it makes me so sad I'll never throw it again."
Jones boasts an impressive competitive resume, having captured the British championship in 2020 and securing a runner-up spot at the UK Championships last year with a personal best throw of 56.53 metres. While her long-term goal is to compete at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, her immediate hurdle is securing replacement gear in time for her upcoming competitions.
Her immediate focus remains squarely on the Commonwealth Games women's final, scheduled for August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium, though this sudden loss of equipment poses a significant obstacle to her training regimen.
"With my entire focus on making the team for the Commonwealth Games, this couldn't have come at a more devastating moment," she stated. "To have all of my javelins damaged at this point in the season is incredibly tough. They're not only expensive, but they're such a personal part of what we do as throwers."
