Rory McIlroy has cemented his status as Europe's premier golfer after a dramatic Masters victory that puts him on the brink of rewriting the record books.
McIlroy emerged from a tense final round at Augusta National to secure back-to-back Masters titles, matching Sir Nick Faldo's European record of six major championships. The Northern Irish star now stands just one major away from equaling Harry Vardon's historic seven—a remarkable achievement considering Vardon's victories came before the Masters or PGA Championship existed.
"I tie Nick, so there's going to be that conversation and debate," McIlroy acknowledged after his one-stroke victory over world number one Scottie Scheffler. "It's a cool conversation to be a part of. It took me 10 years to win my fifth major, and then my sixth one's come pretty soon after it. I'm not putting a number on it, but I certainly don't want to stop here."
Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald didn't hesitate to crown McIlroy as "undoubtedly the best European golfer of all time now," noting his unique achievement as the only European to have won all four major championships.
"It feels like validation," McIlroy reflected on his second Masters triumph, contrasting it with the "lull of motivation" he experienced after completing his career Grand Slam last year.
The victory didn't come easily. After building a record six-shot lead through 36 holes, McIlroy struggled on Saturday with a one-over 73. Entering Sunday tied with Cameron Young, he found himself two shots back after six holes following a double-bogey on the fourth and another dropped shot on the sixth.
McIlroy described his "greatest stress" coming on the 18th hole when his drive sailed right into the trees. "It could go anywhere. It could be anywhere," he recalled of the moment before securing his historic win.
With three majors remaining this season, McIlroy's pursuit of Vardon's record adds another compelling chapter to golf's evolving history. While Jack Nicklaus holds the overall record with 18 majors and Tiger Woods has 15, McIlroy's achievement places him alongside American greats Phil Mickelson and Lee Trevino with six major titles.
The victory also marks McIlroy as only the fourth player to win consecutive Masters titles, further solidifying his place among golf's elite as he continues to chase history.
