Fans hoping for a ground-up sequel to the hit asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight will need to readjust their expectations. Developer Behaviour Interactive has officially taken a sequel off the table, opting instead to continuously modernize the original title so players don't lose their hard-earned progress.
Speaking at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Head of Partnerships Mathieu Cote and Creative Director Dave Richard clarified the studio's long-term vision. While building a sequel from scratch might actually alleviate some of the technical headaches the team faces when updating the aging game, they believe it would ultimately be a massive disservice to their dedicated community.
"There's always a point where we say, okay, we could do a sequel now, and it would be far easier actually to do a sequel with a blind slate than try to fix these issues that we have," Richard explained. "But it never makes sense for the fans. Never ever. They've invested time and money on DBD."
The gaming industry is currently littered with cautionary tales of live-service sequels. High-profile games have recently demonstrated how difficult it is to transition an established community to a new ecosystem, often fracturing the player base in the process. Rather than juggle two competing versions of the same franchise or force players to migrate, Behaviour intends to drag the current iteration of Dead by Daylight into the future.
"It's also very possible to take your game and bring it kicking and screaming into the next decade," Cote said. "We're not going to do a DBD 2, that's for sure. They're not going to have to buy a DBD 2 and restart from scratch."
Recognizing that the game is approaching the 10-year mark—an eternity in the gaming world—Cote emphasized the importance of keeping the experience fresh for both veterans and newcomers. The team's goal is to ensure the title remains a genuinely modern competitive experience rather than just a "nostalgia token."
This steadfast loyalty to the existing player base also extends to how the studio approaches hardware upgrades. While graphical overhauls and technical enhancements are constantly on the table as new console hardware emerges, the developers refuse to implement updates that would unnecessarily lock out fans playing on older systems. For Behaviour Interactive, the priority remains clear: keep expanding the game, but never leave anyone behind.
