NZXT and its partner Fragile have reached a $3.45 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit alleging deceptive practices in their Flex PC rental program. The preliminary agreement, filed in California District Court on April 7th, addresses claims that the companies misled nearly 20,000 customers.

The settlement for impacted customers includes debt forgiveness and finally grants them ownership of their PCs.

The lawsuit centered on allegations that the Flex service failed to clearly communicate it wasn't a traditional "rent-to-own" program, leaving customers unaware they wouldn't automatically gain PC ownership after completing payments. Plaintiffs accused the companies of violating civil RICO statutes through what they characterized as fraudulent business practices.

Under the settlement terms, affected customers will receive debt relief and full ownership rights to their previously rented computers. The resolution comes after months of legal proceedings that scrutinized the program's transparency and marketing claims.

This case highlights growing scrutiny of subscription-based hardware models in the tech industry, particularly around disclosure requirements and consumer protection standards. The settlement awaits final court approval before implementation.
