Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland squad will be noticeably lighter for Tuesday's friendly against Wales in Cardiff, following the withdrawal of four key players from the camp.
Ali McCann, Ruairi McConville, Paddy McNair, and Bailey Peacock-Farrell have all been ruled out of the upcoming fixture, leaving O'Neill with a 24-man squad to navigate the clash.
Preston North End midfielder McCann is still plagued by an ankle injury that kept him out of Thursday's 2-0 World Cup play-off semi-final defeat against Italy. Meanwhile, defensive stalwarts McConville and McNair—both of whom put in grueling 90-minute shifts during the loss in Bergamo—are returning to Norwich City and Hull City, respectively.
Goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell, who watched from the bench as Pierce Charles started between the posts in Italy, completes the quartet of absentees.
The departures create a significant headache at the back for Northern Ireland, compounding the existing loss of injured defender Dan Ballard. However, the defensive shortage opens a potential door for youth. Blackburn Rovers teenager Tom Atcheson could be handed his senior international debut, while established names like Trai Hume, Ciaron Brown, Eoin Toal, and Brodie Spencer remain available to anchor the backline.
Peacock-Farrell's exit brings uncapped Celtic goalkeeper Josh Clarke, currently on loan at Partick Thistle, into the senior fold. Fans could also be treated to a debut for highly-regarded Liverpool teenager Kieran Morrison, who has already made two senior cup appearances for Arne Slot's squad this season.
Northern Ireland's opponents are also desperate for a morale-boosting result. Craig Bellamy's Wales squad enters the friendly reeling from their own World Cup play-off heartbreak, having lost to Bosnia-Herzegovina on penalties at the Cardiff City Stadium after a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
