Philippines Lawmaker's Sexist Remark Sparks Outrage During Impeachment Debate

Quezon City Representative Jesus Manuel "Bong" Suntay has ignited a firestorm of criticism after making inappropriate comments during a House Committee on Justice hearing this week. The controversy unfolded as lawmakers deliberated on impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.

During Tuesday's proceedings, Suntay attempted to defend Duterte's previous statement about "imagining cutting off the head" of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. by drawing a disturbing parallel. The congressman described seeing actress Anne Curtis and finding her "so beautiful and desirable" that he "imagined what might happen," adding that "it was just my imagination."

Committee members immediately suspended the impeachment discussion and voted to strike Suntay's remarks from the official record. When news of the incident reached the public, reactions were swift and furious.

Actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith posted an enraged "what were you thinking?" response on social media, while numerous female entertainment figures joined the condemnation. Veteran broadcaster Karen Davila and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte also criticized the remarks, with Belmonte expressing particular disappointment given Suntay's previous role in passing the city's landmark Gender and Development Law.

"The disappointment expressed by Mayor Belmonte was particularly bitter, as she pointed out that Suntay was part of the city council that supported the passage of Quezon City's landmark Gender and Development Law," the report noted.

Ironically, Quezon City's "Bawal Bastos" ordinance—which criminalizes catcalling and inappropriate comments toward women—technically applies to Suntay's remarks, though parliamentary immunity protects him from legal consequences.

Rather than offering a sincere apology, Suntay has attempted to defend himself in subsequent media appearances and a House plenary address. He offered only a conditional apology "that some felt offended" and argued that imagination alone doesn't constitute an offense.

Legal experts note that while private thoughts remain protected, expressed speech carries different implications—especially when coming from public officials. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions around gender sensitivity in Philippine politics as International Women's Day approaches.

Suntay's defense of Vice President Duterte's statements has inadvertently underscored the very concerns raised in the impeachment complaints against her: that expressed violent imaginings, particularly from leaders, carry significant weight and consequences.
