Wales hooker Dewi Lake will not wear an Ospreys jersey again after opting for season-ending shoulder surgery, leaving him in a desperate race against time to be fit for the summer Nations Championship.
The 26-year-old forward was already slated to depart the Welsh region for Gloucester ahead of the 2026-27 season. However, this medical intervention means his domestic campaign has abruptly concluded, stripping him of a final farewell tour in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and the European Challenge Cup.
Ospreys head coach Mark Jones confirmed the disappointing news, explaining that the front-rower had been battling a persistent issue for quite some time.
"He has had a grumbling shoulder for a while which has niggled him on and off and he has tried his best to play through it at certain points," Jones noted. "He could possibly have got to the end of this season, but the feeling from himself was he would like to get it sorted. To be fair to him, it is his body and he has the right to make sure he is in tip-top shape."
The timing of the surgery also casts a heavy shadow over Lake's availability for Steve Tandy's Wales squad this summer. Following an impressive Six Nations performance—where he stepped up to captain the national side in place of an injured Jac Morgan—Lake now faces an arduous rehabilitation process.
Wales is scheduled to play an uncapped fixture against the Barbarians at Twickenham on June 27, before officially kicking off their Nations Championship against Fiji in Cardiff on July 4. Stiff away fixtures against Argentina on July 11 and South Africa on July 18 will quickly follow.
Jones acknowledged that the hooker is aiming for a rapid recovery to join the international summer series, though medical timelines remain fluid.
Reflecting on the abrupt end to Lake's influential Ospreys tenure, Jones sympathized with the anticlimactic departure.
"Sport is cruel sometimes and does not always give you the dream ending that you want," Jones said. "You just have to deal with the cards that you are dealt. Dewi can look back at his time with Ospreys very fondly."
In Lake's absence, the Ospreys will rely on Sam Parry, Lewis Lloyd, and Efan Daniels to shoulder the hooking duties, starting with their critical Challenge Cup last-16 showdown against Ulster in Belfast this Saturday.
