The city's infrastructure is being pushed to its limits as the combination of climate change, rapid urbanization, and seasonal weather patterns creates what experts are calling a "perfect storm" of environmental stress.
"We're seeing temperatures that haven't been recorded in decades, and the urban heat island effect is making it worse," said Dr. Maria Santos, an environmental scientist at the University of the Philippines. "The concrete and asphalt that cover much of Metro Manila absorb heat during the day and release it at night, preventing the city from cooling down."
Health officials report a significant increase in heat-related illnesses, with emergency rooms seeing more cases of heat exhaustion and respiratory problems. The elderly, children, and outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to the extreme conditions.
