Sunderland Football Club has issued a forceful condemnation of racist abuse directed at forward Brian Brobbey on social media platforms following the team's 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham on Sunday.
In an official statement, the club declared it has reported the incidents to the Premier League, relevant social media companies, and law enforcement agencies, demanding "swift action" against the perpetrators. The statement emphasized that this is not an isolated case, pointing to similar abuse targeting teammates Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida in recent months as evidence of a persistent problem.
"We stand firmly with Brian and offer him our full and unwavering support," the club's statement read. "Racism is abhorrent and has no place in our game or in society, and we will continue to call it out clearly and unapologetically every time it occurs. Football must be a safe and inclusive environment for all—without exception."
The Premier League echoed Sunderland's outrage, stating it is "disgusted by the ongoing discrimination players are facing on social media" and is committed to collaborating with clubs, authorities, and platforms to combat the issue. The league warned that individuals found guilty could face severe consequences, including potential prison sentences, football banning orders, and criminal records.
Brobbey, a Netherlands international who has scored six goals in 25 league appearances this season, was involved in a notable on-field incident during the match when he collided with Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, leading to Romero's emotional exit from the game due to injury.
This latest case adds to a troubling pattern in English football this season. In February alone, four Premier League players—including Sunderland's Mundle—were targeted with online abuse over a single weekend, prompting an investigation by the UK Football Policing Unit. Just this month, a man was arrested in connection with alleged racist abuse directed at Sunderland's Geertruida during a match against Newcastle United in March, which was temporarily paused under anti-discrimination protocols.
Anti-discrimination organizations report that online abuse targeting footballers has reached record levels, underscoring the urgent need for systemic action beyond individual club statements.
