For decades, fans have analyzed the cryptic lyrics of Nirvana's discography. Now, Courtney Love has shed light on the true inspiration behind one of Kurt Cobain's most famous lines—and it's a direct shot at Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.

During a recent appearance on Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan's podcast, The Magnificent Others, Love opened up about the elitism of the 1990s alternative music scene. In a nearly two-hour conversation, the pair aired their grievances about the era, specifically branding Gordon as a "gatekeeper."

"She was really horrible in the ’90s," Love stated. "I remember in Holland I was hanging out with you and they were so mean." Corgan agreed, noting that when he tried to pay his respects to Sonic Youth as a fan, he was met with outright rudeness.

This hostility, according to Love, ultimately made its way into Nirvana's 1993 smash hit "Heart-Shaped Box." She revealed that the song's iconic chorus—specifically the lines, "Hey, wait, I've got a new complaint / Forever in debt to your priceless advice"—was penned by Cobain as a sarcastic jab at Gordon.

"That's about Kim. That's literally about Kim," Love explained on the podcast. "He was so mad at her. Kurt’s whole thing was he hid his light under a bushel for 'Bleach'."

Love elaborated that Cobain felt pressured to downplay his pop sensibilities and obscure his immense talent during the band's early Bleach era. She attributed this intense pressure to two main factors: the rigid, unwelcoming expectations of the Seattle grunge scene, and the overbearing influence of Kim Gordon herself.
