Fareed Zakaria, speaking on The Ezra Klein Show, dissected the aftermath of Trump's aggressive posture toward Iran. What began with Iran's nuclear program "completely and totally obliterated," according to Trump's own assessment, has transformed into a scenario where Iran now wields a more immediate and disruptive weapon: the ability to strangle the global economy by threatening the Strait of Hormuz.
"It has gained, it has realized and shown the world that it can destroy the global economy, that it can block the Strait of Hormuz, and that that would have a cataclysmic follow-on effect," Zakaria noted.
The strategic costs, as outlined by analysts, are substantial and multifaceted:
- Economic Leverage for Iran: Tehran is positioned to potentially monetize its control over the critical waterway, with estimates suggesting up to $90 billion in annual revenue—roughly double its current oil sales.
