Wales Fly-Half Sam Costelow Sidelined for Season, Summer Internationals in Doubt

Welsh rugby has been dealt a significant blow as Scarlets and Wales fly-half Sam Costelow will miss the remainder of the season following ankle surgery, casting serious doubt over his availability for the national team's summer campaign.

Costelow, 25, sustained the injury during Wales' narrow Six Nations defeat to Scotland in Cardiff this past February. The setback forced him to miss the final two matches of the tournament, where he was replaced by Ospreys' Dan Edwards. The promising playmaker had earned a recall to the starting lineup for that pivotal match and was performing impressively before his unfortunate exit.

With the Scarlets' United Rugby Championship (URC) season concluding in mid-May, Costelow will be absent for the club's final four fixtures. His focus now shifts to a rigorous rehabilitation timeline, with his participation in Wales' upcoming international schedule hanging in the balance.

Wales are set to begin their summer program with an uncapped fixture against the Barbarians at Twickenham on June 27. This is followed by the inaugural Nations Championship match against Fiji at Cardiff City Stadium on July 4. Head coach Steve Tandy's squad will then embark on a challenging southern hemisphere tour, facing Argentina in San Juan on July 11 and world champions South Africa in Durban a week later.

Costelow is not the only Welsh international facing a race against time. Hooker Dewi Lake has also been ruled out for the rest of the club season and is considered a major doubt for the summer Tests, compounding selection headaches for the Welsh management as they prepare for a demanding schedule.
