"What is VAR For?": Furious Bompastor Sent Off After McCabe Escapes Red for Champions League Hair-Pull

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor unleashed a scathing critique of match officials after Arsenal’s Katie McCabe dodged a red card for pulling Alyssa Thompson’s hair during a dramatic Women's Champions League quarter-final.

The controversial moment occurred in the dying stages of the match. Chelsea had just netted an injury-time goal to bring the aggregate score to 3-2, keeping their comeback hopes alive. As American winger Thompson surged forward on a dangerous breakaway, McCabe reached out and yanked her hair, immediately halting the attack.

Despite the cynical nature of the foul, referee Frida Mia Klarlund opted against booking McCabe, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) inexplicably declined to review the play.

The inaction left Bompastor incensed. The Chelsea boss's furious touchline protests initially earned her a yellow card, which swiftly escalated to a red as her outburst continued. In a dramatic twist, the defiant Frenchwoman refused to leave her technical area as Arsenal successfully defended their aggregate lead to secure a semi-final berth.

Arriving at her post-match television interview armed with a mobile phone replay of the foul, Bompastor did not hold back.

"For me, it is clearly a red card for the Arsenal player. She's pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair. If the VAR is not able to check that situation, I don't know why we have the VAR. I'm the one getting a red card when I think the Arsenal player should be the one getting a red card."

Bompastor revealed that the incident left Thompson "crying and emotional," adding that her squad simply "do not deserve that level of refereeing."

McCabe took to social media shortly after the final whistle to defend her actions, insisting the hair pull was an absolute accident.

"I just want to clarify that I was genuinely reaching for the shirt. I wouldn't ever want to pull someone's hair. Full respect to Thompson."

Arsenal manager Renee Slegers backed her player, noting that McCabe immediately apologized to Thompson on the pitch. Slegers echoed the sentiment that the grab was "unlucky" rather than malicious.

However, the lack of official intervention left pundits baffled. Former England skipper Steph Houghton labeled the tactical foul "really, really cynical," while Brighton's Fran Kirby expressed shock that VAR bypassed the play entirely, even if she believed McCabe was genuinely aiming for Thompson's jersey.

Hair-pulling has historically resulted in strict punishments elsewhere in football. In the men's Premier League, both Everton's Michael Keane and Southampton's Jack Stephens were recently handed straight red cards for similar offenses, adding further fuel to the frustration surrounding Chelsea's bitter European exit.
