Despite a wave of sponsor withdrawals, the managing director of Festival Republic is standing firm on Kanye West's headline slot at this year's Wireless Festival in London.
Melvin Benn, who oversees the festival's operations, issued a statement defending the controversial rapper's inclusion, urging the public to embrace "forgiveness and giving people a second chance." He described these values as "becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world."
Benn admitted his own initial reluctance, stating, "I would ask people to reflect on their instant comments of disgust at the likelihood of him performing (as was mine) and offer some forgiveness and hope to him as I have decided to do."
He emphasized that West's performance is his "legal right" and clarified that the festival is "not giving him a platform to extol opinion of whatever nature" but rather to showcase his musical catalog.
However, this stance has not prevented major corporate sponsors from distancing themselves. PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch, PayPal, and Diageo have all pulled their financial support from the event following West's booking announcement.
The festival is scheduled to take place at Finsbury Park this July, with West set to close out all three nights.
