In a recent talk for the OE Bootcamp, Kayla Lar-Son, Indigenous Programs & Services Librarian at the University of British Columbia’s X̱wi7x̱wa Library, explored how Indigenous protocols can reshape open education. The session focused on the “6 R’s of Indigenous OER,” a framework designed to guide the respectful incorporation of Indigenous Knowledges into openly licensed teaching materials.

The 6 R’s build on the FAIR and CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Sovereignty, as well as the OCAP® principles (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession). They were originally adapted from the 4 R’s of First Nations and Higher Education and teachings from the UBC Longhouse. Lar-Son discussed recent developments based on her own reflection and protocols, offering an Indigenous-centered approach to open educational resources (OER).

This talk is part of a broader series by the UROpenEd Program, which aims to foster openness and equity in higher education.
