7 Officers Hurt in Labor Day Clashes Draws Ire from Napolcom

The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has condemned the injuries sustained by seven police officers during Labour Day protests in Manila, calling the attacks "unjustified and unacceptable."

In a statement released Tuesday, Napolcom Commissioner Carlito G. Lo expressed outrage over the violence, emphasizing that law enforcement personnel were merely performing their duties to maintain peace and order during the legally permitted assembly.

"We strongly denounce the acts that led to the injury of our police officers," Lo said. "They were there to protect the rights of the protesters and ensure public safety. To be met with violence is deplorable."

The injured officers were among hundreds deployed to secure the rally, which drew thousands of workers demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Reports indicate that the situation escalated when some protesters threw objects at the police line, resulting in minor injuries to the officers.

Napolcom has called on the public to respect authorities and pursue grievances through legal channels. Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is reviewing footage to identify those responsible for the attacks.

"Violence against police is a serious offense," Lo warned. "We will ensure that those behind these acts face the full force of the law."

The Labour Day protests, organized by various labor groups, proceeded largely peacefully except for the isolated incident. Police said no protesters were reported injured.

As the investigation continues, Napolcom reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting both civilians and law enforcers.
