Afghan Women's Refugee Football Team Earns FIFA Recognition, Eyes Olympic Debut

The FIFA Council has approved the Afghan women's refugee team, known as Afghan Women United, to participate in international tournaments under the Afghan flag. This decision allows the team to compete in qualification matches for the 2026 Asian Cup and the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The team consists of players who fled Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover, and their official recognition marks a significant step for displaced athletes. The decision followed a request from the Afghan Football Federation and the Refugee Football Committee.

"This is a historic moment for Afghan women in sports," said a spokesperson. "It shows that football can be a beacon of hope and unity even in exile."

FIFA's move has been praised by human rights organizations, emphasizing the importance of supporting refugee athletes and upholding gender equality in sports.
