Alex Ligertwood, Santana's Storied Lead Vocalist, Dies at 79

Alex Ligertwood, the Scottish-born singer who lent his powerful voice to Santana across multiple stints, has passed away at the age of 79, his family confirmed.

His daughter, Merci, announced the news on Saturday. The Brogan Agency later confirmed that Ligertwood "passed peacefully in his sleep with his doggy Bobo by his side" at his longtime home in Santa Monica, California, just two weeks after performing his final concert.

Ligertwood first joined Carlos Santana's legendary Latin rock band as lead vocalist in 1979, and would return five times over the next 15 years. He sang on landmark albums including "Marathon" (1979), "Zebop!" (1981), "Shango" (1982), and the live set "Sacred Fire: Live in South America" (1993).

Guitarist Brandon Paul, who toured with Ligertwood in recent years as part of the "Icons of Classic Rock" show, called him "a world-class professional." In a statement, Paul said: "His voice was a force of nature -- soulful, from the heart, and legendary every single night. Beyond the music, he was an amazing human being and a dear friend."

Merci shared a heartfelt tribute: "My dad loved many things. At the forefront were his family & friends, music, and Scotland. He continued doing shows up until the very end, just the way he wanted… Though he is no longer with us, it's a comfort to know his music and talent will live on."

Ligertwood's survivors include his daughters Merci and Kali, and son Brandon.
