Alonso Hints at Extending F1 Career Beyond 2026 Season

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has signaled for the first time that he intends to continue racing beyond the current season. The 44-year-old Spaniard, whose contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the year, told the Monaco historic grand prix's official channel: "I love what I do. I love racing. I did my first race when I was three years old, and I am 44, so 41 years of my life I have been behind a steering wheel. So the moment I have to stop racing, it will be a very hard decision and difficult to accept."

He added: "The time will tell. I will feel it. At the moment, I don't feel it is that time yet. I feel competitive, I feel motivated, I feel happy when I drive. So, yeah, hopefully not the last season."

Previously, Alonso had only said he would consider his future during the year, noting that it would be harder to retire if his car was not competitive and that he would head into 2026 thinking it would be his final year.

Aston Martin entered 2026 with high expectations, partnering with former world champions Honda as their works engine supplier and hiring design legend Adrian Newey in March 2025. However, the team has struggled with poor performance and reliability issues. Honda's engine has faced criticism for vibrations causing failures and driver discomfort, while Newey revealed that more than half of the performance deficit stems from the chassis, with the design process hampered by his late arrival and wind tunnel problems.

Despite these challenges, Newey is confident the gap can be closed on the chassis side during the season. Honda is expected to receive permission for extra development and upgrades, as allowed under rules for struggling engine manufacturers. Given Aston Martin's limited options for a top driver to replace Alonso in 2027, the veteran may be reluctant to end his illustrious career after such a difficult season, hoping for an upturn that would allow a fitting swan song.
