Mirra Andreeva, the 19-year-old Russian sensation, battled past Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) on Thursday to earn her spot in the Madrid Open final. The victory marks her first appearance in the championship match at this prestigious clay-court event.
Andreeva, seeded ninth, took the first set with a single break of serve. She then served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, only to be broken back by the resilient Baptiste. The American, who stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round, pushed the set to a tiebreak. There, she saved three match points before Andreeva finally clinched the win on her fourth opportunity.
"Honestly, I feel so much adrenaline inside. I'm still nervous. I'm just so happy I won and saved all those set points," Andreeva said after the match. "The serve helped me a lot. I'm so, so happy — I can't find words to describe this feeling."
With the victory, Andreeva becomes the second-youngest finalist in Madrid Open history, trailing only Caroline Wozniacki. She also becomes the first teenager to reach three WTA 1000 finals, having won titles in Dubai and Indian Wells last year. This season on clay, she has won all but one of her 13 matches, including a title in Linz and a semifinal run in Stuttgart.
Andreeva will face 26th seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in Saturday's final. Kostyuk advanced with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 win over lucky loser Anastasia Potapova. The Ukrainian dropped the second set in just 30 minutes but rebounded strongly, racing to a 4-0 lead in the decider. After closing out the match, Kostyuk declined to shake hands with her Russian-born opponent.
In the men's draw, defending champion Casper Ruud fell in the quarterfinals to unseeded Belgian Alexander Blockx, 6-4, 6-4. Blockx, ranked a career-high 69th, has now defeated four consecutive seeds in Madrid. He will face two-time champion Alexander Zverev in his first tour-level semifinal. Zverev cruised past Italian 10th seed Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-4 to reach his seventh Masters 1000 semifinal in his last eight appearances.
Top seed Jannik Sinner meets 21st seed Arthur Fils in Friday's other semifinal.
