Arsenal Closing In: 7-0 Rout of Leicester Tightens WSL Title Race

Arsenal delivered a dominant 7-0 victory over Leicester City on Wednesday, intensifying the Women's Super League title race. The win cuts Manchester City's lead to eight points, though the Gunners hold two games in hand.

Midfielder Frida Maanum, who scored and assisted twice on her 100th WSL appearance, said, "We like to be in a hunting position. We want to hunt them from the back and try to catch them."

Manager Renee Slegers remained cautious: "I don't know. We have nothing yet so we have to keep on pushing."

Arsenal capitalized on City's shock 3-2 defeat to Brighton days earlier. The result boosted Arsenal's goal difference to 33, six behind City. Leah Williamson's glancing header marked Arsenal's 103rd goal under Slegers — the most of any WSL team since her appointment in October 2024.

Slegers praised her squad's depth, having rested key players ahead of Saturday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Lyon. Smilla Holmberg scored her first two Arsenal goals, while Stina Blackstenius netted twice in nine minutes. The win also condemned Leicester to a relegation play-off.

With momentum and games in hand, Arsenal are poised to make a dramatic late-season push.
