Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman became visibly emotional during a post-flight press conference on Saturday, reflecting on the profound experience of returning to Earth after a historic lunar mission.
Wiseman and his crewmates had just completed a debrief in Houston, Texas, following their splashdown near San Diego on Friday. During the conference, the commander delivered an impassioned speech that offered a rare glimpse into the human side of space exploration.
"The world will never fully understand what we experienced on our journey around the moon," Wiseman told the audience, his voice breaking with emotion. He described how, despite their eagerness to launch before takeoff, once in the vacuum of space, the crew's thoughts turned overwhelmingly to returning home to their families.
Wiseman spoke of the deep bond formed with his fellow astronauts, saying, "I feel connected to this crew like we're family—bonded for a lifetime."

The Artemis II mission, which launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 1, represented the first crewed journey to the moon since 1972. The capsule made a picture-perfect splashdown in the Pacific Ocean at 5:07 PM PT, descending under three deployed parachutes after its high-speed reentry.
