Artificial Intelligence Could Revolutionize Fight Against Superbugs, Surgeon Says

Antibiotic resistance, a rapidly escalating public health crisis, now causes over one million deaths globally each year and contributes to nearly five million more. These drug-resistant infections are not only tougher to treat but also far more expensive, often leading to extended hospital stays that drive up costs for both healthcare systems and patients.

Currently, treatment decisions rely heavily on physician intuition rather than precise data. Ara Darzi, a renowned British surgeon, argued at the WIRED Health conference that artificial intelligence is poised to transform this landscape, offering new ways to diagnose and manage drug-resistant infections. However, Darzi warned that without proper incentives, these promising innovations may never reach the patients who need them most.
