Badminton Set for Major Overhaul: New Scoring System Approved for 2027

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has voted to implement a new scoring system, set to take effect on January 4, 2027. The change, described by the BWF as "an important milestone for the future of badminton," will see matches shift from the current best-of-three games format (first to 21 points per game) to a 3x15 system, where each game is won by the first player or pair to reach 15 points.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul announced the decision at the federation's annual general meeting in Denmark, stating that the new format aims to deliver more excitement, tighter contests, and improved scheduling. "We are building a sport that speaks to the next generation, while continuing to invest in the long term future of our players," she said.

The 3x15 scoring system is expected to reduce match durations, lower player fatigue, and decrease injury risks. The change follows extensive testing, analysis, and consultation, which considered five different scoring options.

While acknowledging reservations from some stakeholders, Leeswadtrakul emphasized that the fundamental nature of badminton will remain unchanged. "The skill, the tactics, the physical and mental demands, and the drama of the sport will remain," she added.
