Scott Mills, the veteran broadcaster and newly appointed host of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, has been abruptly fired following allegations regarding his "personal conduct."
The BBC confirmed the sudden departure in a brief official statement, stating that the 53-year-old presenter is "no longer contracted and has left the BBC." The dismissal comes just days after Mills signed off his Tuesday morning broadcast by cheerfully telling listeners he would be "back tomorrow." The following day, Gary Davies stepped in to cover the slot without explanation.
The abrupt termination has sent shockwaves through the broadcasting house. Lorna Clarke, the BBC's Director of Music, addressed the situation in an internal memo to staff, acknowledging that the news was "sudden and unexpected."
"Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV," Clarke stated, recognizing the profound shock the announcement would bring to both colleagues and loyal listeners. She added that she would update staff on future plans for the morning show when possible, but would not comment further on the allegations.
Fellow BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine addressed the controversy live on-air, admitting he was completely blindsided by the news. Vine informed his audience that he had only learned of Mills' dismissal from a BBC news bulletin 17 minutes before going on air and had no additional details regarding the misconduct claims.
While the BBC has kept the exact nature of the allegations tightly under wraps, reports from The Mirror suggest the misconduct claims may stem from a relationship Mills was involved in more than a decade ago. Neither the BBC nor Mills has officially addressed these rumors. During his final broadcast, Mills notably struggled on-air, telling his audience he was "getting everything mixed up today" and would "try again tomorrow."
Mills' sudden exit marks a dramatic end to a decades-long career with the national broadcaster. After joining Radio 1 in 1998, he became a beloved network staple, eventually hosting the Official Chart show from 2018 to 2022. He transitioned to Radio 2 in 2022 to take over Steve Wright's afternoon slot and recently secured the coveted Breakfast Show gig in January 2025 following Zoe Ball's departure—a role he previously described as a "lifelong dream come true."
Outside the radio booth, Mills has been a familiar face on British television, competing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2014 and winning Celebrity Race Across The World alongside his husband, Sam Vaughan, in 2024. The BBC has not yet announced a permanent replacement for the Breakfast Show.
