Anthony Belleau will pull the strings at fly-half for the Northampton Saints as they prepare to host Castres in a high-stakes Champions Cup last-16 showdown this Friday at Franklin's Gardens.
The French playmaker is one of six changes to the starting XV made by the Premiership leaders. Belleau steps in to replace Fin Smith, who remains sidelined after suffering a head injury during last week's dramatic league victory over Saracens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Northampton's front row has also seen a significant reshuffle. With Trevor Davison likely out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury and Manny Iyogun also unavailable, Danilo Fischetti gets the nod at loose-head prop. Luke Green retains his spot at tight-head, while Craig Wright rotates in to start at hooker in place of Curtis Langdon.
In the engine room, powerful South African lock JJ van der Mescht returns to the starting pack. The back row sees Callum Chick stepping in at number eight, a move that pushes Henry Pollock to the open-side flanker role and sees Tom Pearson shift to the replacements bench.
Behind the scrum, England international Fraser Dingwall partners with the in-form Tom Litchfield in the midfield. Captain George Furbank will lead the squad from full-back.
Phil Dowson's men enter the knockout phase with strong European momentum, having won three of their four pool matches to secure a second-place finish. The Saints also hold a distinct psychological advantage over Castres, having bested the French outfit twice last season—in both the pool stage and the quarter-finals—on their way to the tournament final.
Castres, who finished third in their pool with an even split of two wins and two losses, travel to England hoping to build on recent domestic success. The Top 14 side snapped a three-game losing streak last weekend with a crucial win over Montauban, lifting them to 10th in their domestic league. Flanker Baptiste Delaporte will captain the visitors, whose backline features the notable threat of former All Black center Jack Goodhue.
The stakes are immense: Friday's winner will punch their ticket to next weekend's quarter-finals, where they will face the victor of Saturday's all-English clash between Bath and Saracens.
