Ben Stokes could reclaim the England captaincy as early as next week for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, following an investigation into a curfew breach.
Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were investigated after staying out past the team's midnight curfew following England's first Test victory. The pair were present when a security staff member was struck by a Saracens rugby player. Both were ruled out of the second Test at The Oval while the enquiry proceeded.
However, sources indicate the investigation is nearing resolution, potentially clearing the way for Stokes to lead the side in Nottingham starting June 25. An official announcement may be delayed until after the current Test concludes.
Although sidelined from international duty, Stokes and Atkinson remain eligible to play domestic cricket. Stokes is set to feature for Durham in their County Championship match against Northamptonshire, while Atkinson will play for Surrey against Glamorgan.
England director of cricket Rob Key and head coach Brendon McCullum have refrained from publicly endorsing Stokes' captaincy, fueling speculation about his future. Joe Root, deputizing as captain for the second Test, described his role as "game-by-game."
The ECB released a statement on June 8 confirming the curfew breach and subsequent investigation. Despite initial fears that Stokes might retire, he returned to training with Durham last weekend, signaling his commitment.
Stokes has captained England since 2020, leading the team in 27 Tests with a record of 16 wins.
