In a recent YouTube Shorts video, physicist and philosopher Curt Jaimungal presented a taxonomy of 'Theories of Everything' (TOE), expanding the concept far beyond its traditional physics roots. He outlined five distinct categories:
- Physical TOEs – The classic attempt to unify all fundamental forces and particles in physics.
- Mathematical TOEs – Theories that aim to derive all physical laws from a single mathematical structure.
- Biological TOEs – Frameworks that explain all life processes via a unifying principle, such as evolution or self-organization.
- Consciousness TOEs – Models that integrate subjective experience into a fundamental account of reality.
- Economic/Everyday TOEs – Smaller-scale theories that try to explain everything from market behavior to the absorbency of paper towels.
Jaimungal noted that despite their different scopes, all these theories share a common thread: they attract deep contempt from those who believe such grand unification is impossible or misguided. The video, which has garnered over 2,800 views, teases a full-length discussion on his channel.
