"It was basically like Croatia, but cheaper," says travel blogger Em, describing her Montenegro experience. "Kind of a combination of a city and a beach break."
Montenegro has emerged as a versatile Balkan destination, allowing visitors to combine coastal relaxation with mountain excursions and cultural exploration within a compact area. Albania's accessibility via Greek island ferries has positioned it as an affordable Mediterranean alternative, with its turquoise waters and historic stone towns drawing comparisons to more expensive destinations. Travel professionals note particular appeal for budget-conscious younger travelers and those interested in unique wildlife encounters.
Even within perennially popular Spain, regions like Asturias and La Rioja are gaining traction as visitors seek experiences beyond Barcelona and coastal resorts. These northern areas offer diverse landscapes combining beaches with mountains, catering to specialized interests like culinary tourism.
Industry observers attribute these shifting preferences to multiple factors, including geopolitical concerns redirecting travel plans, economic considerations, and a desire for more meaningful travel experiences that extend beyond traditional holiday packages.
