Christopher Harborne, the British billionaire behind Reform UK's record donations, has vowed that the government's upcoming £100,000 cap on political donations from overseas citizens will not stop him from giving to the party. In an interview with the Telegraph, the Thailand-based cryptocurrency investor claimed he was "the reason" for the legislation and said he would challenge the cap in court or return to the UK to circumvent it.
Harborne, who has donated £12 million to Reform UK in 2025 alone, also addressed a controversial £5 million gift he made to party leader Nigel Farage in early 2024. Farage has said the money was for personal security, but Labour and the Conservatives have accused him of failing to declare it as required by parliamentary rules. The Conservatives have referred the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner and the Electoral Commission.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed denied the cap was aimed at Reform UK, stating it was necessary to prevent hostile states from funneling money through overseas donors to influence UK elections. Harborne dismissed the government's reasoning, saying, "I don't believe the government has a right to stop me, and they won't. There is always a way."
Reform UK sources maintain that all donations and gifts have been declared in accordance with the rules. Farage, who says he cannot rely on state-funded security, described Harborne as an ardent supporter deeply concerned for his safety.
