A tragic boating accident occurred Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco Bay when a pontoon boat caught fire and sank near Alcatraz Island, leaving one person dead and two others missing.
The San Francisco Fire Department reported that the vessel was carrying 19 people when flames erupted around 3:30 PM between Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Sixteen individuals were rescued, but one person was killed and two remain unaccounted for.
Dramatic aerial footage from KTVU FOX 2 showed the boat disappearing beneath the water as emergency crews, including firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard, rushed to the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and search efforts continued into Tuesday evening.
