Brentford has officially broken its club transfer record, securing the signature of Malian international Mamadou Sangare from French side Lens. The 24-year-old midfielder joins the Premier League outfit on a comprehensive five-year contract, which includes an option to extend for an additional 12 months.
While the exact financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the club confirmed the fee easily eclipses the £42.5 million spent to bring Dango Ouattara to West London from Bournemouth last summer.
Sangare arrives following a stellar campaign in France. He racked up 33 appearances for Lens last season, playing a pivotal role in propelling the team to a runner-up finish in Ligue 1 and capturing a historic first Coupe de France title.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews expressed his excitement over the acquisition, noting that the dynamic midfielder has been a long-term target for the club.
"Mamadou is someone that we've tracked for quite some time. He's been on our radar and was a player we were really keen to bring in," Andrews stated. "Last season was a huge season for him following a couple of loan spells during which he developed. At Lens, he performed at such a consistently high level for a team that finished second in the league."
The 24-year-old's professional journey began with Red Bull Salzburg before taking him on a series of developmental loan spells. Standout performances at Hartberg eventually paved the way for a move to Rapid Vienna, and ultimately, his breakout stint at Lens. On the international stage, Sangare has been equally vital, earning 16 caps for Mali and recently featuring in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
"From the conversations I've had with him, he's very keen to come here. He's a humble young man, but he's equally as determined to succeed in his career," Andrews added. "He fits everything we want from a Brentford player, on and off the pitch. He'll be a player that I think will become very, very popular with the fans."
