Prosecutors in California have filed a misdemeanor charge against Britney Spears for driving under the influence, following her arrest last month. The pop star, 44, was taken into custody on March 4 after authorities observed her driving a BMW "erratically at a high rate of speed" on a Southern California highway.
Spears reportedly entered a rehabilitation facility shortly after the incident. Her representatives described her actions as "completely inexcusable." Her court arraignment is scheduled for next Monday, but she is not required to appear personally due to the minor nature of the charge.
The Ventura County District Attorney's Office filed the case on Thursday. Prosecutors noted that such charges typically do not result in jail time when no crash or injury occurs and the defendant has no prior similar offenses. Instead, defendants are often allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs.
Joey Buttitta from the district attorney's office confirmed that this option will be offered to Spears. Standard penalties include 12 months' probation, completion of a DUI education class, and payment of fines and fees.
Spears, a mother of two, is one of the best-selling pop artists of all time, with hits like "...Baby One More Time," "Toxic," and "Stronger." She was under a 13-year conservatorship that ended in 2021.
Following her arrest, a representative stated: "Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law... Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."
