Britney Spears has voluntarily entered a treatment facility, her representative confirmed, just over a month after the singer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in California.

The 44-year-old pop icon was taken into custody on the evening of March 4 and released the following morning, according to police records. In a statement issued after the arrest, Spears' representative called the situation "an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable."

"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life," the representative said. "Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

Following the arrest, Spears received support from her inner circle, including her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. "Her boys are going to be spending time with her," the representative added. "Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for her well-being."

Former husband Sam Asghari also offered words of encouragement, telling reporters at an Oscars event, "We have not spoken to each other, but I wish her the most success and recovery. I think privacy is the most important thing when it comes to that."

Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4 to address the legal charges stemming from the March incident.
