BSP and AMLC Defend Actions After Complaint by VP Duterte's Husband

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) have asserted that they are operating within the bounds of the law, following a criminal complaint filed by Manases Carpio, the husband of Vice President Sara Duterte. Carpio's complaint accuses BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona Jr. and other officials of violating the Anti-Money Laundering Act, bank secrecy laws, and the Data Privacy Act.

In a statement released on Monday, the central bank said, "The Governor has yet to receive a copy of the complaint and will respond appropriately upon receipt, before the proper forum." The BSP further emphasized, "We emphasize that the BSP and the AMLC continue to perform their mandates in accordance with law, guided by independence, professionalism, and due process."

Carpio alleges that the respondents conspired to illegally disclose confidential banking records, which he claims are being used as "a tool for black propaganda and political harassment" against Vice President Duterte, who is currently facing an impeachment case ahead of the 2028 elections. The complaint also reportedly includes several members of the House of Representatives.
