Jos Buttler emerged from a prolonged batting slump to deliver a match-winning performance for the Gujarat Titans, securing a thrilling one-run victory over the Delhi Capitals with a dramatic final-ball run-out in the Indian Premier League.
Buttler, who had endured 18 innings without a half-century across formats, rediscovered his explosive touch with a blistering 52 runs from just 27 deliveries. His innings featured five sixes, including a signature scoop shot and a towering hit over long-on, as he helped propel Gujarat to a formidable total of 210-4.
"Amazing," Buttler exclaimed after the match. "Great to get the win. It was a very lucky throw but I am delighted. We desperately needed a win and I am glad we managed to sneak through."
The England wicketkeeper's contribution proved crucial beyond his batting. With Delhi needing two runs from the final delivery to win, Buttler executed a precise underarm throw from behind the stumps to run out Kuldeep Yadav, who was attempting a quick single with David Miller.
Miller had brought Delhi to the brink of victory with a spectacular late surge, smashing two sixes and two fours in the penultimate over before clearing the boundary again in the final over. However, his decision to decline a single with two balls remaining proved costly as he missed the subsequent delivery, finishing unbeaten on 41 from 20 balls.
KL Rahul's impressive 92 from 52 balls had anchored Delhi's chase, but the team fell agonizingly short at 209-8 after 20 overs.
Buttler's return to form comes after a challenging period that included a difficult T20 World Cup campaign where he averaged just 10.9 across eight matches. His innings against Delhi marked his first fifty since January and provided a timely boost for one of England's most accomplished white-ball players.
"I have been searching for [runs] a little but felt in good touch since I have been here," Buttler reflected. "I have played long enough to know that it will come back at some point."
Supporting Buttler's effort, Shubman Gill contributed 70 from 45 balls while Washington Sundar added a rapid 55 from 32 deliveries, setting up a tense finish that culminated in one of the most dramatic conclusions of the IPL season.
